Mitilini shipwreck

“Mitilini” shipwreck. In Kassandra’s peninsula you will find this shipwreck. It is an old, German motorship, which was dated in 1941.

This ship used to bring oil, wine and cereals from Thessaloniki to Mitilini. In 1961 the ship was sunk after it was hit in a reef during a storm. The ship was full of wine bottles which lay there till today.

You will find it in 20 meters depth. It is a 40 meters long ship and today is a shelter for many kinds of fish.

Alexandros shipwreck

In the spring of 1960, the cargo ship “Alexandros“, due to poor visibility, ran aground on the south coast of the cape. Having found itself at the beginning of its life at the opposite end of its current position, it reached the Greek seas at the beginning of the last century, then escaping the forced break-up and the Second World War, to finally end up, after 91 years of voyages, in Poseidi. It is worth noting that the ship was built almost at the same time as the lighthouse (five years later).

Today, the sunken ship can be accessed from the main road to the AUTH camp, after passing the archaeological site of Poseidon. Not far from the end of the beach there is a sign warning of strong currents in the sea. Swimming about 100 m in a southerly direction the remains of the ship stand out at a shallow depth, so that even from the surface one can distinguish the sides of the stern and the right part of its bow.

The distance between the two main parts of the wreck betrays the size of the ship while their arrangement implies that most of it is buried under the sand so that depending on the state of the sea, parts of it are revealed or hidden.

The shipwreck combined with the lighthouse and the archaeological site constitute a thematic set of monuments that condense the chronological span of three millennia on this characteristic promontory of Halkidiki.
